Parkland Hospital board approves preliminary site plan

. . . continued from page one

The preliminary site plan for the new campus does just that. It will include construction of an 862-bed, full service, 17-story acute-care hospital that includes 1.7 million square feet, an outpatient center of 380,000 square feet, a 275,000-square-foot office center, parking for 6,000 vehicles, a utility plant and other support facilities. The campus will be nestled on Parkland-owned property north of Medical District Drive and east of Harry Hines Boulevard.

Hospital officials will encourage visitors to the facility to use mass transit, as the health care campus will be divided by a Dallas Area Rapid Transit (DART) line and station slated to go online in 2010.

The bond issue pays only slightly less than 60 percent of the $1.27 billion cost of the facility. Cash on hand from previous year operations totaling $250 million will also go toward construction costs as will $100 million from future operations and $150 million from a philanthropic campaign. That campaign, which began in September 2008, already has raised $80 million toward its $150 million goal.

The Parkland history dates back to 1894, when it opened as a wooden building. It opened at its current site in 1954. A Level 1 Trauma Center, the facility is a public hospital, supported by tax dollars from Dallas County property owners.

The new facility is expected to be completed in 2014.
