A 2,600-acre site annexed by Austin earlier this year will include an Amazon robotics manufacturing facility.
Known as “Dog’s Head” because of the shape of the land, the development is located along the Colorado River, not far from Austin-Bergstrom International Airport in Southeast Austin.
The newly announced Amazon facility, which will create between 300 and 500 manufacturing and engineering jobs, will “produce the robotics systems that work alongside Amazon’s employees to handle repetitive tasks and heavy lifting,” the company said. Amazon already has about 17,000 employees in the Austin area.
Following annexation in May, the city approved a tax increment reinvestment zone (TIRZ) in July that will utilize some of the tax dollars the project generates to finance needed infrastructure.
In addition to the Amazon manufacturing plant, the Dog’s Head developer, Austin-based Endeavor Real Estate Group, envisions thousands of single-family homes and apartments, as well as millions of square feet of office, retail and industrial space.
Full buildout could take as long as three decades, according to an agreement between the city and Endeavor. City staffers have estimated Dog’s Head could bring in as much as $3.5 billion in tax revenue over that span of time.
