The Victoria Independent School District (VISD) will spend $54 million to modernize both SMITH STEM Academy and STEM Middle School. While official construction timelines have not been released, the district plans to select a design firm during its July 16 meeting.
A total of $32 million will be dedicated to modernizing and improving the infrastructure of the 56-classroom Smith STEM Academy. Work will consist of updating and enhancing building assets, including windows, roofing, HVAC systems, electrical systems and plumbing.
The district plans to build a new facade and office area, taking the opportunity to install an elevator for ADA accessibility. Additional details include upgrading the building’s safety and fire suppression systems and expanding the existing playground and gym.
The remaining $22 million will enable VISD to implement similar work for STEM Middle School before incorporating it with the STEM K-8 facility. Among the changes, the district will modernize the main campus’ windows, roof, HVAC systems, electrical infrastructure and plumbing.
In addition, the district will renovate the library and cafeteria and install a new facade with a covered entry. VISD plans to upgrade the site’s safety and fire suppression systems while also addressing courtyard flooding issues.
