The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) will spend $180 million to widen a section of US 90 in Liberty County. Construction is expected to begin in 2027.
The project stretches between FM 563 and State Highway (SH) 61, covering 11.4 miles in total. As part of the department’s plan to widen the highway, the project calls for full reconstruction. US 90 serves as a critical transit connector in the region, operating as both a hurricane evacuation route and a major freight corridor.
Despite its importance, the highway’s current design fails to meet current and projected traffic demand. Its lack of capacity ultimately limits its functionality, impacting congestion, mobility and results in insufficient service levels. Updating the highway is required to ensure it meets both immediate and future traffic demand, supporting mobility and safety in the area.
TxDOT will convert the current two-lane undivided highway into a four-lane highway. This updated version would include divided raised medians in non-urban sections and turn lanes along the entire project site length. Each lane will be 12 feet wide with shoulders ranging from four to 10 feet.
The project will require a width of up to 250 feet, with TxDOT estimating adding another 103.3 acres in right of way (ROW) to facilitate development.
