The Texas A&M University (TAMU) System will spend $20.5 million to renovate a building for the GI Lab on its College Station campus. Construction is anticipated to begin in 2027.

The renovation will cover roughly 41,200 square feet of the building’s total 55,169 square foot area, consisting of nearly 28,400 square feet being dedicated to the GI Lab itself.

The project will introduce new spaces for students, faculty and researchers, including molecular and microbiome studies, dedicates office space and support areas for specimen processing and analysis. Approximately 59% of the assignable square feet will be provided for research spaces to support collaboration, engagement and scientific discovery.

The university will renovate the remaining 12,800 square feet – located on the first floor of the building – into research swing space. Plans include allocating approximately 30% for flexible labs, 29% for lab support spaces and 41% for offices.

Additional work will include updating the stairwells, replacing the elevator and replacing the exterior windows.
