A $200 million project to alleviate traffic problems near the Orlando Sanford International Airport will move into the production phase following approval of an interlocal agreement between the Central Florida Expressway Authority (CFX) and Seminole County.
The plans for the SR-417 Sanford Airport connector project, also known as the Seminole Expressway, include a 2-mile-long stretch of road that leaders said will help ease present and future traffic concerns in Seminole County. The connector will provide a new direct option for drivers using northbound SR-417 to reach Lake Mary Boulevard and Red Cleveland Boulevard.
The new connector will give travelers, particularly airport traffic, an alternative route rather than forcing them onto already congested roadways, CFX said.
The new agreement states that Seminole County will contribute $50 million toward the project. That contribution will be made in two payments: the first within 30 days of executing the agreement and the second during the county’s fiscal year 2028.
Once the first installment is received, CFX will begin the consultant selection process for design. It must reach 60% design by September 2028.
According to CFX, based on current funding, construction of this project is expected to begin no later than the end of December 2031.
Per the agreement, the design will also provide access to the local roadway network, while preserving flexibility for future plans.
CFX leaders said the project supports growth by providing the infrastructure necessary to serve planned developments in a responsible way while improving overall connectivity between air and ground travel, ensuring the transportation network functions as a cohesive system rather than a series of disconnected segments.
