SpaceX is negotiating a ‘significant financial investment’ toward the advancement of a long-term regional water solution in the Rio Grande Valley, according to reports.
The investment — which was reported this week by Brownsville officials — is anticipated to potentially double current regional potable water production capacity as well as provide water resources for Brownsville and the surrounding communities, the city said.
“The goal of these discussions is to strengthen long-term water security, support future population and economic growth, and help meet the significant funding and infrastructure requirements necessary to expand the region’s potable water supply,” the city said in a statement.
The Brownsville Public Utilities Board is listed as the principal shareholder in the regional water project.
Terms of the investment have not been disclosed.
The announcement came the same week a first reading of a proposed ordinance regarding a disannexation request by SpaceX, which is seeking to expand its operations closer to the Port of Brownsville.
A second reading and final vote by the city commission are required for the voluntary disannexation of 444 acres in Cameron County to take effect. The second reading is scheduled for Saturday.
SpaceX has said the property will not be used for rocket launches or rocket testing.
Neither the city nor SpaceX have confirmed that the expansion and the potential water solution are linked.
If the commission denies the disannexation, SpaceX could still pursue it through the courts.
