The Round Rock City Council unanimously approved a cost-sharing agreement with Williamson County March 12 to advance two major roadway projects totaling roughly $51 million: the Deep Wood Drive extension connecting RM 620 to Sam Bass Road, and segments 5 and 6 of Kenney Fort Boulevard.
Round Rock is serving as the lead agency on both projects, coordinating funding applications and project development in partnership with Williamson County.
Under the agreement, Williamson County will contribute up to $11 million toward the Deep Wood project and $9 million for the Kenney Fort segments. Round Rock, meanwhile, has applied for approximately $30.7 million in Capital Area Metropolitan Planning Organization (CAMPO) funding for the two projects — part of roughly $55 million in total applications the city submitted across four projects. If that funding is awarded, the city and county have agreed to split any remaining construction costs evenly.
The projects are intended to improve east-west connectivity and relieve congestion in some of Round Rock’s fastest-growing corridors. The Deep Wood Drive extension would create a new connection between RM 620 and Sam Bass Road, offering an alternative route for drivers and improving access across the western portion of the city. Meanwhile, Kenney Fort Boulevard segments 5 and 6 would extend a key north-south corridor designed to support long-term growth and traffic circulation.
Both projects remain in the planning phase, with timelines dependent on whether Round Rock secures CAMPO funding. Public Works Director Michael Thane said the applications are competitive, even as CAMPO faces a high volume of requests.
Progress will also hinge on acquiring necessary right of way, adding another layer of coordination before construction can begin.
