Riot Platforms has signed a $9.1 billion, 20-year agreement to provide 191 megawatts of data center capacity at its Rockdale campus in Milam County, about 60 miles northeast of Austin, to Anthropic, maker of the Claude AI chatbot.
The agreement, which runs through June 2048, includes two optional five-year extensions that could increase the total value to $16.1 billion.
The deal represents a significant shift for Riot’s portfolio, as the company moves from primarily using its power capacity for bitcoin mining to leasing that capacity to companies with large electricity needs for artificial intelligence and high-performance computing. The company began developing its data center business in 2025 and generated its first data center revenue in the first quarter of 2026.
Riot purchased the 200-acre Rockdale site in January for $96 million after previously operating there under a long-term ground lease. The Rockdale facility has 700 megawatts of developed capacity available for data center workloads.
The Anthropic agreement follows a January 2026 deal with Advanced Micro Devices for data center capacity at Rockdale. The original agreement called for 25 megawatts of critical IT load capacity under a 10-year lease worth about $311 million. AMD later exercised an additional 25 megawatts, bringing its contracted capacity to 50 megawatts. AMD has options that could eventually increase its capacity at the site to 200 megawatts.
Together, the Anthropic and AMD agreements show how Riot is shifting from primarily using its power capacity for bitcoin mining to leasing that capacity to companies with large computing needs. Rather than using all of that capacity itself, Riot can now earn revenue by providing space and power to companies that are building out artificial intelligence and high-performance computing operations.
