The Port of Galveston has received $8.2 million in grants to make a series of mobility, pedestrian and traffic safety improvements in and around the port.

The first round of projects targeted by the port will primarily target accessibility and traffic safety upgrades. Thes include accessibility ramps, lighting, traffic control, pavement markings and signs at eight nearby intersections.

The port will use a separate grant to install signage at three of the port terminals. The signage – based off existing materials at Cruise Terminal 10 – will help enhance traffic flow and safety measures.

These projects, adopted formally last year, align with the port’s Comprehensive Safety Action Plan. The plan identified and provided solutions to address roadway safety concerns. The port received an additional grant to expand on the action plan, potentially identifying future projects including:

  • Intersection improvements.
  • Traffic calming features.
  • Wayfinding.
  • Bike lanes.
  • Sidewalks.

Looking forward, the port will conduct feasibility studies for a flyover from Interstate 45 to the port’s internal roadway. Should the project be approved and built, it would significantly reduce congestion and improve overall cruise and traffic flow in the area.
