The Port of Brownsville has partnered with a private company to develop a $3.2 billion next-generation shipyard. Called Port Alpha, the yard will be the largest in the country once completed.
The shipyard will drive the port’s efforts to manufacture medium- and large-class autonomous and autonomy-capable vessels. The project will be one of the largest economic development initiatives in the region’s history. Officials anticipate that construction will break ground later this year, with operations expected to begin by 2028.
Port Alpha will initially occupy 835 acres, greatly amplifying the nation’s maritime strength and domestic shipbuilding capacity. However, the developers plan to leave room for expansion, with plans to fully build out the site to almost 4,000 acres.
At the current specifications, the shipyard will be able to manufacture vessels up to 850 feet. Once fully built out, the expanded site may be able to produce vessels over 1,200 feet. The port of Brownsville was chosen based on several factors, including workforce availability, a 95% tax abatement agreement approved by Cameron County officials, land scale, logistics and waterfront accessibility.
The chosen location, alongside future expansion, will offer hundreds of acres of waterfront access, deepwater channel connectivity, multimodal logistics infrastructure and ample room to grow the shipyard’s footprint. The project and subsequent operations will create more than 10,000 direct jobs, generate more than $160 billion in regional economic impact and boost the state’s revenue by $264.5 billion.
Greenlighting the Port Alpha project represents another feather in Texas’ cap as a global leader in manufacturing, transportation, innovation, economics and national security. The state has made historic arrangements within the past few years, contributing to its rise in economic prosperity and industrial investment. These include attracting companies like SpaceX to headquarter and expand operations in Texas, founding the Texas Stock Exchange and establishing the Texas Space Commission – each success realizing the state’s role as an economic powerhouse and global pioneer in cutting-edge industries.
