Joaquin Rodriguez has been selected to serve as the next public works director for the City of El Paso, stepping into a vacant role where he will coordinate planning, funding and delivering capital infrastructure investments.

Rodriguez previously served as the city’s grant-funded programs director. He will continue to execute the responsibilities of his previous role in his new position.

He has been with the City of El Paso since 2014 after moving into government work from his career as a consult in the private sector. Rodriguez has held a variety of roles since then, including transportation planning administrator, project manager and long-range urban planner.

Aside from his work with the city, he has also served as a senior policy advisor for the El Paso County Precinct 3 commissioner. Between 2017 and 2019, Rodriguez worked as a project manager for urban planning and real estate development for the El Paso Independent School District.

Rodriguez earned both bachelor’s and master’s degrees in mechanical engineering from The University of Texas at El Paso. He has also received his credentials as a planner through the American Institute of Certified Planners.
