The city of Dallas will spend $9 million to renovate the Martin Weiss Recreation Center. Construction is expected to begin in May 2027.
While the city has pitched early concepts for the center’s design, officials are still accepting public feedback to finalize certain details before opening bids later this year.
The renovation focuses on the city’s plan to add another 8,700 square feet to the property. This would provide ample space for significant changes, including converting the gym into a 5,400 square foot multipurpose space.
Another major component of the project is the potential addition of an aquatic center. The facility may include a zero-depth entry, body flume slide, tot slide, spray feature and diving board. The project vision also calls for a basketball hoop and multi-level play unit.
The project may also move the front entrance of the building to the addition and add storage. Other details include building a lobby, reception area, larger restrooms and changing rooms and dedicating nearly 1,000 square feet for miscellaneous purposes.
The center has a list of issues that need to be addressed before the refurbished site can open again. Plans include repairing or replacing drainage, roof leaks, windows, doors, trees damaging the roof and enhancing overall accessibility.
