Wabash General Hospital advances $55M expansion plan

July 8, 2026

The Wabash General Hospital Board of Directors in Illinois has approved a $55 million expansion plan, one of the largest projects in its history. The board recently solidified plans to move into the project’s final design phase.

The project will take a phased construction approach, allowing builders to make progress while minimizing disruptions for patients and staff. While the 75-year-old hospital has operated under good conditions, the expansion will provide significant improvements for outdated elements and enable the hospital workforce to meet demands.

As part of its design, the project will build a two-story north addition to the existing facility. The addition will include a modern surgical suite, featuring five full-size operating rooms and enough extra space for a sixth later down the line.

Plans include incorporating additional new facilities and spaces to enhance services and futureproof the building. These include establishing a new sterile processing department, expanding emergency services, upgrading the laboratory, building a public lobby and incorporating additional room for future growth.

The hospital has factored in other elements for completion in later project phases. These may include an in-house MRI machine, expanded physical therapy services and relocating the medical-surgical unit.
