The University of Texas (UT) System has made two leadership changes, selecting Dr. Melina R. Kibbe as the sole finalist for president of the UT Health Science Center at Houston (UTHealth Houston) and Dr. William Inboden as executive vice president and provost of UT Austin.
The UT System Board of Regents announced Dr. Kibbe’s appointment July 14. She is the current dean of the University of Virginia (UVA) School of Medicine and chief health affairs officer at UVA Health. She will succeed UTHealth Houston Interim President LaTanya J. Love after a 21-day waiting period.
Dr. Kibbe joined UVA in 2021, leaving the University of North Carolina (UNC) at Chapel Hill for the role. She was with UNC for more than five years as a professor for the Departments of Biomedical Engineering and Surgery.
She also served as deputy director for the Institute of BioNanotechnology in Medicine at Northwestern University and professor and vice chair of research for that same institution’s Department of Surgery in the Feinberg School of Medicine for nearly 13 years. Dr. Kibbe graduated from the University of Chicago College of Biological Sciences and the Pritzker School of Medicine.
Effective Aug. 1, Dr. Inboden will assume his responsibilities as executive vice president and provost of UT Austin. He will also hold a position as the William Powers, Jr. chair and a joint appointment with the Department of History and the School of Civic Leadership.
Dr. Inboden brings an extensive higher education leadership catalogue to the role, currently serving as a professor and director of the Hamilton School of Classical and Civic Education at the University of Florida. His new role will be a return to UT Austin, as he previously served as executive director and William Powers, Jr. chair of the university’s Clements Center for National Security from 2013 to 2023.
Before leaping into his career in higher education leadership, Dr. Inboden served in several federal roles. He was senior director for strategic planning for the National Security Council, policy planning staff and special advisor for the Department of State and congressional staff for both the U.S. House and Senate.
Dr. Inboden graduated from Yale University with a Ph.D. in History and from Stanford University with a Bachelor of Arts in History. He will succeed David Vanden Bout in the role.
