The Texas Water Development Board (TWDB) will distribute $33.7 million to help two cities implement water and wastewater system improvements. The board approved the financing at its January meeting.

San Marcos will receive the larger of the two shares, coming in at $17.3 million. The funds will go toward a wastewater system improvement project, with plans to build a 6.5 million-gallon-per-day (mgd) lift station servicing the Hemphill Creek wastewater basin.

The city will build roughly 11,600 feet of 18-inch force main to transport wastewater from the future lift station to the nearby wastewater treatment plant (WWTP). An additional 11,700 feet of a 24-inch reclaimed water main will also be installed. San Marcos will build that reclaimed water main parallel to the wastewater force main with a connection to the reuse water pump station at the WWTP. Once complete, the city will decommission the existing lift stations.

Port Arthur will spend the remaining $16.4 million on water system improvements. The project involves replacing nearly 111,200 feet of 6-inch to 20-inch water distribution lines. The city also plans to replace 730 valves and 259 fire hydrants.

Expansion will play another key role in the water system improvement project as the city proposes adding 16 fire hydrants and 13,583 feet of 6-inch to 16-inch water distribution lines.
