Tony Sauerhoff has been appointed chief artificial intelligence (AI) and innovation officer (CAIO) at the Department of Information Resources (DIR), a new role leading the agency’s upcoming AI Division.
The Department of Information Resources is responsible for delivering technology solutions and protecting state and local technology infrastructure. As CAIO, Sauerhoff will oversee the agency’s forthcoming AI Division, which will engage directly with small and midsize agencies while continuing to support larger departments across Texas. The division will help agencies evaluate and deploy artificial intelligence tools, proof-of-concept testing, assessments and implementation support. Its establishment aligns with the department’s initiative to serve as both a policy leader and hands-on partner in advancing innovation across state government, according to agency officials.
Sauerhoff’s appointment follows his one-year tenure as chief information security officer (CISO) at DIR, and his earlier service as deputy CISO and state cybersecurity coordinator at the department. He continues to serve on the board of directors for GovRAMP, a nonprofit focused on secure technology procurement for the government.
Sauerhoff brings years of professional experience in cybersecurity and government technology. Prior to his time at DIR, Sauerhoff worked as a circuit IT security officer for the U.S. court and the Deputy Director of the Marine Corps Reserve in New Orleans. Sauerhoff holds a Bachelor of Science in Cybersecurity from Champlain College, a Master of Science in Information Security and Privacy from the University of Texas at Austin and CISSP and GSLC cybersecurity certifications.
