The Texas A&M University System Board of Regents has appointed Dr. L. Diane Hurtado and John A. Barton to senior executive leadership roles over enterprise operations across the state. Both appointments take effect immediately. 

Hurtado has been promoted as the system’s next vice chancellor for nuclear security initiatives – a position responsible for all system engagement with the Nuclear Security Enterprise. She has been a part of the Texas A&M University System for nearly 16 years. During that time she has served in a number of capacities, including: 

  • Senior associate vice chancellor for nuclear security initiatives. 
  • Senior advisor to the deputy administrator for defense programs. 
  • Senior associate vice chancellor for national laboratories and national security strategic initiatives. 
  • Associate vice chancellor for national laboratories management. 
  • Associate vice president for federal relations. 

Hurtado has earned three degrees from Texas A&M University, including a doctorate degree of Philosophy in Interdisciplinary Engineering and both a master’s and bachelor’s degree of Science in Aerospace Engineering. 

Barton will take over as interim vice chancellor for business affairs. He brings nearly 40 years of state government, higher education and private sector experience to the role. Barton most recently served as executive director for the Texas A&M – RELLIS campus. Previous roles with the system include serving as associate vice chancellor and executive director of the Center for Infrastructure Renewal, associate vice chancellor and executive director of the RELLIS campus, professor of engineering practice and assistant vice chancellor for strategic initiatives. 

In addition, Barton spent nearly 12 years with the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT). During that time, he served as deputy executive director, assistant executive director and as a district engineer. He has a bachelor’s degree of Science in Civil Engineering from Texas A&M University.
