The city of San Antonio has created an advisory body focused on advancing community-based transportation plans and policies. The Multimodal Transportation Commission will ensure the city places its residents first in all current and future transportation matters.
The commission will consist of 13 representatives, one from each city council district, as well as critical agencies such as VIA Metropolitan Transit and the Alamo Area Metropolitan Planning Organization (AAMPO). Appointed members will provide real input and feedback from the community, advocating for transit riders, cyclists, traffic engineers and transportation-disadvantaged people.
According to the city, topics the commission will advise on include:
- Updates to transportation-related plans and city codes.
- Metrics and benchmarks for safer mobility systems.
- Exceptions to the city’s Complete Streets Policy.
- Ongoing projects and policies from the city’s Department of Transportation.
San Antonio has made several new adjustments to transportation policies over the last few years, prioritizing initiatives that expand mobility options, improve safety and save lives. Some of the more notable adoptions include the Bike Network Plan earlier this year, the 2024 Complete Streets Policy, the updated Vision Zero Action Plan and the Transit-Oriented Development Policy Framework.
