The Raleigh-Durham International Airport (RDU) will build a $175 million expansion to its main roadway. Early utility work has begun on some aspects of the multi-phase project, with more construction opportunities planned to break ground in fall 2026.
The John Brantley Boulevard Extension project will widen and extend the roadway to facilitate traffic flow and mitigate congestion. The airport will add capacity and expand the Terminal 2 curbside.
Once completed, the roadway will feature additional lanes, taking the John Brantley Boulevard from two lanes to four. These enhancements will contribute to better traffic efficiency and the removal of bottlenecks.
One of the most prominent changes featured in the design will be the total reconstruction of the roadway bridge connecting to Terminal 2’s departure area. In addition, the project will reconfigure the International Drive intersection and reduce merging traffic.
The roadway extension project is one of four major capital improvement initiatives planned to bring RDU into the modern age. The federal government has signaled that it will provide a $25 million grant to help facilitate widening.
