This week’s Lone Star profile is Aubrey A. Spear, general manager for the San Jacinto River Authority.

Your public career highlights and education

I am currently the general manager for the San Jacinto River Authority in Conroe, Texas, where I’ve served since 2024. Prior to my position with the authority, I was director of water utilities for the city of Lubbock from 2007 to 2023. I maintain over 20 years of private sector professional engineering and business consulting experience to the water industry. I am also a proud graduate of Texas Tech University with a B.S. in Civil Engineering and my M.B.A from Brigham Young University.

What you like best about public service

I enjoy the people and thinking strategically about solving long-term water issues that will make a difference in our communities.

An example of some of the best advice you have ever received

We need to think of things that have never been thought of and dream of things that never have been dreamed of and ask, “Why not?”

Something you wish more people knew about the division of government you serve

I wish more people understood the efforts that are going on behind the scenes to make sure we have plenty of safe, clean water to drink for generations to come.

Any current project or initiative that you are working on

We are evaluating cost effective ways to provide additional treated surface water to our existing customers in Montgomery County. We are also evaluating the condition of aging water and wastewater infrastructure in The Woodlands to determine the best renewal program approach.

One thing outside of government service people may not know about you

My wife, Donna, and I enjoy spending time with nine grandchildren. We enjoy traveling and exploring. We enjoy serving in our church and in our community.
