The General Land Office (GLO) has allocated $45.2 million to support multifamily housing projects and street and drainage improvements across five counties. The funds will help housing authorities across each county recover from disasters dating back to 2008, ensuring residents have safe, reliable housing.
The following are a selection of the projects receiving support:
The Galveston Housing Authority will distribute $14.7 million to repair homes, improve drainage infrastructure and fix water damage. Plans include making critical system upgrades across multiple properties that rehabilitate elevators, replace generators, repair exterior facades and reconstruct units and parking areas.
The authority will target a separate rehabilitation project to resolve water intrusion issues at another residential building. The effort will waterproof unrentable units and replace damaged exterior and interior systems, such as exterior insulation and finish system cladding, brick veneer and other structural components. Plans to improve drainage infrastructure at another location will involve installing concrete flumes, underground detention systems, lift stations and bioswale modifications.
The Harris County Housing Authority will use its $10 million allocation to support the construction of a new 120-unit development. The project vision includes two buildings designed to serve elderly residents.
The Mission Housing Authority will allocate $6 million to build three separate housing developments. The first project will be a 104-unit, three-story facility featuring fire-separated sections complying with flood-resilient design elements and modern safety standards. Both the second and third projects are 72-unit developments built across multiple three-story buildings with a clubhouse.
The Brownsville Housing Authority will provide $6 million for multiple housing developments. The first project will build an 82-unit development across four buildings and a retail building. The site will include a clubhouse and retail space. The second construction development will provide 80 units across five structures.
Finally, the authority will support a rehabilitation project in Brownsville that will convert an eight-story hotel into 44 affordable housing units. Plans include rehabilitating the interior, modernizing all building systems and restoring historical elements including masonry, wood and stucco work.
The remaining grant recipients include:
- The Port Arthur Housing Authority will receive $5 million to help rehabilitate 100 single family houses, a 96-unit property and 18 buildings of an 86-unit development.
- The San Juan Housing Authority will allocate $2 million to create 14 affordable housing units across seven duplexes.
- The Baytown Housing Authority will distribute $1.5 million for a housing infrastructure rehabilitation project, focusing on a 30-unit multifamily property with failing water and sewer systems.
