The City of Corpus Christi is moving forward with the more than $15 million Holly Road Trestle Trail to Tourism Trail Project. The long-anticipated plan received a major boost with a nearly $12 million grant awarded through the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT). The trail will repurpose an abandoned train trestle into a scenic pedestrian and cycling path.
The grant funding will cover most of the costs to develop the hiking and biking trail. Overall cost will also be supported by $1.3 million from the American Rescue Plan fund and just under $2.5 million in city contributions.
The project includes the construction of a 15-foot-wide shared-use path and the installation of a pedestrian bridge using the existing piles from the former railroad crossing. The plan will enhance recreational access and improve connectivity to the Oso Bay Wetlands Preserve and existing trail system. The trail will spur further improvements to the city’s trail network by promoting alternative transportation.
The project is moving from the planning phase to the design phase, with solicitations for design services to be released in the coming months. Because the trail is near water, permitting is expected to take additional time, with construction expected to begin in 2027.
