The city of Brownsville, Texas secured $27.8 million in funding for Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) capital improvement projects.

The funding comes from the Rio Grande Valley Metropolitan Planning Organization and will be allocated toward projects seeking to improve traffic flow and reduce congestion, according to a release by the city.

The projects are expected to begin in May 2026 and include the $10.3 million Citywide ITS Capital Improvement Project, $5.4 million International Boulevard Traffic Signal Improvement Project and the $5 million E. 12th St. Traffic Signal Improvement Project, according to the release. About $4.5 million will go toward the deployment of traffic signal system equipment and $2.4 million will go toward traffic monitoring and signalized roads management.
