Since the online training system was first launched in November 2007, 159 of 254 counties have used the training and 2,887 election workers have been trained.
"In fact, we have doubled the number of poll workers using the online training since the launch," she said.
Improvements to the system this year - the new system went online last week - include a voter system simulation training component that shows poll workers how to set up the equipment, how to get the equipment ready for voters and procedures for transmitting election results after the polls are closed.
"We expect these new features will increase the number of users," Burton said. "With the higher costs of fuel and expenses to the county to conduct training, this is a very economical way to reach a potentially new audience in the poll worker arena."
Other benefits of the online training are that it is free, available 24/7, saves on gas, is convenient for the poll worker and is self-paced, she said. Election workers with computers and Internet access can use the online training on Election Day to check procedures or set up equipment.
Approximately 30,000 poll workers are needed Election Day in November, if four poll workers staff each of the state's more than 8,000 voting precincts.
"We are expecting a large turnout this year. People interested in working on Election Day should contact their county election officials," Burton added.
