The database is updated frequently, with insurance companies in the state sending policy information each week to the TexasSure contractor and the information is then matched to TxDOT's vehicle registration records. DPS officials are hopeful that drivers without liability insurance will get - and keep - the insurance when they realize there is now a way to both identify fake proof-of-insurance cards and those who cancel their policy once they get their vehicles registered or inspected. Proof of insurance is required for annual vehicle registrations and inspections.
The fine for driving a vehicle that does not have liability insurance coverage can be up to $350 and can also include court costs and other fees. Repeat offenders could lose their driver's license for up to two years.
The TexasSure program is first being implemented in the Austin area and is expected to be implemented statewide later this year.
