'Transfer 101' targets community college students

. . . continued from page one

Program organizers chose to target community college students because statistics show that they generally are more likely to transfer to universities and graduate than students who begin their college careers at four-year institutions. However, the challenge the program faces is that fewer than 20 percent of community college students who qualify actually transfer to four-year institutions.

Ellis points out that qualified transfer students complain about the lack of available information, which led to the public awareness campaign. Ellis called the campaign "critical" to seeing that qualified students know about the resources that could help them transition to a four-year college or university.

The program will soon create its own Web site to provide resources for facilitating the transfer of community college students to universities. Each of the state's 50 community college will be asked to provide a link from their Web sites to the "Transfer 101" Web portal. The Web site is expected to be completed by fall 2009, in time for the beginning of the academic year.
